WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING Dorchester Paws, formerly known as Frances R. Willis SPCA, is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of animals in Dorchester County, South Carolina. Dorchester Paws is the only open-admission shelter in Dorchester County, serving towns including Ridgeville, St. George, Summerville, and surrounding communities of Dorchester County. Partnering with Dorchester Code Enforcement, we take in every lost, abandoned, and abused animal and provide them with food, shelter, and medical attention until they are adopted to their new home.

In this role you will be responsible for preparing financial reports, cost accounting duties, balance sheets, income statements and profit/loss statements, maintaining general ledger, reconcile accounts, close monthly books, and accounts payable/receivable.


  • Support the day-to-day financial operations including oversight of accounts payable and receivable, maintenance of the general ledger and at times handling of donations.
  • Work with Dorchester Paw's Leadership to prepare, analyze and present financial reports (income statements and balance sheets) in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly and annual financial statements to staff.
  • Collaborate on the annual budgeting and planning process in conjunction with the staff; administer and review all financial plans/IRS 990 filing and budgets; monitor progress and changes and produce monthly budget versus actual reports.
  • Work with the Development Team to produce financial reports for funders; maintain shared grant reporting calendar due dates and submissions, including all required financial deliverables as stated per grant awards and contracts.
  • Assist with payroll functions as required.
  • Perform bank reconciliations and monitor cash flows (cash, check, credit cards).
  • Perform daily processing of cash drops and preparation of bank deposit.
  • Maintain office environment and order supplies and laptops to ensure staff have appropriate resources and coordinate with vendors as needed.
  • Ensure all reports are kept in storage in compliance with Dorchester Paw's established retention period.
  • Assist, support, counsel and advise the Executive Director (ED) with respect to financial matters and report, as required and directed by the ED, in all departments and areas, including but not limited to bank balances, cash flow reports, accounts payable and receivable reports, operational financial statements.
  • Any other job duties as assigned.


  • High School or equivalent education required.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred, preferably in Accounting/Finance or Business Education
  • Certification as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Or Certified Financial Planner (CFP) Is Preferred.
  • Understanding of nonprofit finances and reporting. Some work experience in a philanthropic, non-profit, or mission-driven organization is a plus.
  • Experience working with QuickBooks accounting software desired.
  • 3+ years of accounting experience preferred, preferably in a non-profit environment
  • Attention to detail, accuracy, and thoroughness.
  • Discreet, flexible, self-motivated, with the ability to work independently or with a team.


  • Must be able to speak, read, write and understand the primary language(s) used in the workplace.
  • Must be able to apply mathematical operations to tasks and be a self-starter/work independently.
  • Must be proficient in all Microsoft Office programs, with most proficiency in Excel.
  • Ability to maintain compliance with all local, state and federal laws and regulations Outstanding financial and analytical skills.
