Our client, Charleston Parks Conservancy, is looking for a Development Manager. This position reports to the Director of Development and Marketing as a deputy empowered to implement the Conservancy's ongoing fundraising programs. Learn more about the company here.


The Development Manager will execute the Conservancy's corporate sponsorship program, Perennial program, membership and stewardship programs, annual fund, impact funds, project campaigns, and related appeals. They will work alongside the DOD and other development and marketing team members to sustain and increase financial support for Charleston Parks Conservancy projects and programs. Finally, the Development Manager is responsible for stewarding and soliciting donors.


Key responsibilities include creating and maintaining the Conservancy's individual, corporate, and foundation giving programs. Other responsibilities include prospect research and solicitation, making recommendations for and managing all platforms and integrations used by the Conservancy that facilitates donations, event revenue (ticketing, online auctions, etc), corporate sponsorships, foundation giving and grants, and donor stewardship.


Corporate and Foundation Relations

  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward business and corporations, civic organizations, foundations, and other community partners for sponsorships, grants, and other financial support.
  • Work with the Director of Development to create a strategy and realize an annual goal for mission-aligned corporate and foundation support by category (programs, events, capital projects) in keeping with the overall financial needs of the organization.
  • Manage the Conservancy's overall corporate Moves Management strategy, targeting prospects and foundation officers for personal visits, calls, and solicitations with the Director of Development, Executive Director, board members, and/or committee members.
  • Maintain a record of all activities using the Conservancy's CRM (SalesForce). Work closely with the Development and Marketing Coordinator to make sure that all gifts received from these donors have appropriate stewardship plans and are recorded accurately, thanked promptly and appropriately.
  • Work with the Volunteer Manager to identify and qualify potential corporate sponsors from volunteer groups
  • Collaborate with the Program Manager to plan fundraising engagement events.
  • Collaborate with the developmental team, program team, horticulture team, and other Conservancy staff members to help create all sponsorship packages/proposals/contracts. Maintain foundation and grant process internally, and ensure confirmed sponsors receive all agreed-upon benefits, acknowledgments, and recognition.

Donor Acquisition & Stewardship

  • The Development Manager will provide leadership for the Conservancy fundraising initiatives, including annual appeals, project campaigns, major gift solicitations, sponsorships, and grants management with the Grants Manager. They will:
    • Lead/manage prospect research and screening via a Moves Management tracking system, targeting individual prospects for personal visits and solicitation by Director of Development, Executive Director, board members, and project/campaign committee members.
    • Create and implement a discrete strategy for identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding donors (<$10,00 annually).
    • Assist the Director of Development with the management of the agency's stewardship of large donors (>$10,000 annually).
    • Plan and implement multiple, customized direct mail appeals.
    • Lead and manage all fundraising ad hoc committees (ie Perennials, Capital Project Committees).


  • Develops membership strategy, overall program development, and implementation as it evolves
  • Work with the Marketing and Fundraising Manager and Development Coordinator to develop online marketing directed toward obtaining and engaging new members. Including but not limited to welcome email series, member updates, and online stewardship.

Perennial Donor Management

  • Manage, steward, and recruit new perennials
  • Manage Perennial Committee with the help of the Committee Chair
  • Lead Perennial renewal campaigns alongside Spring and Fall Campaigns

Database Management

  • The Developmental Manager will be the leader of the Conservancy's donor database (SalesForce), overseeing the Development and Marketing Coordinator. Oversee daily operations of the database which tracks gift/revenue and biographical information on all constituents. Management includes all aspects of data input and output. They will:
    • Ensure the accuracy and integrity of SalesForce data.
    • Develop and maintain efficient systems for data cleansing, data entry, gift processing, prospect research, and relationship management.
    • Ensure proper tracking, management, and reporting for all agency gift programs.
    • Use SalesForce data to track progress against fundraising goals and provide regular reports.
    • Support Conservancy staff by assisting with creation of reports and mailing lists, developing and implementing database policies and procedures. Coordinate and plan for future data conversions/upgrades as needed. Support training of staff in SalesForce and associated applications.
    • Create and implement Stewardship and Prospecting system in SalesForce.


  • The Development Manager will develop an annual budget, track progress against goals, and produce reports and updates as needed.


  • Detailed oriented with strong organizational, analytical, and planning skills
  • Ability to cultivate relationships with a variety of people (donors, community members, corporate executives, program officers, vendors, etc)
  • Adaptive and flexible with an ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and a variety of demands
  • Takes initiative and work independently as well as in a team environment
  • Proficiency and experience with information technology and basic accounting principles
  • Committed to maintaining confidentiality and a high degree of accuracy in the donor records
  • Excellent interpersonal and both written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Apps, and donor databases (SalesForce preferred)


  • Bachelor's Degree or Associate's Degree combined with relevant experience or additional coursework
  • 5 to 7 years of experience in fundraising with a preference for experience in individual, corporate, and foundation development
  • Experience in managing direct mail solicitation and managing a complex database


  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends
  • Work is performed in a normal office setting with minimal exposure to health or safety hazards; substantial time is spent working on a computer
