Our client, Dorchester Paws, is searching for a Veterinarian to maintain the well-being of their shelter animals.
JOB SUMMARY
The Chief Veterinarian primary responsibility is to provide preventative care, diagnosis, and treatment to our shelter animals by tending to their medical needs. Our Chief Veterinarian must be self-motivated, team player, dependable, able to multi-task, and enjoy caring for animals! Our staff is must be able to uphold the mission of our shelter by instilling humane principles into society through the prevention of cruelty to animals; to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, reunite lost pets with owners, and through adoptions, find homes for as many stray animals as possible; and to practice animal kindness, fight overpopulation by encouraging spaying and neutering, and champion responsible pet ownership through public education. The Chief Veterinarian is responsible for the medical care of the animals at our shelter.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES
- Ensure the Safety of shelter animals and staff utilizing safe restraining techniques, following standard protocols, and maintaining clean, sterile, and organized treatment areas, exam rooms and labs
- Maintain proper and complete medical records
- Diagnose and treat all animals in a safe and caring manner
- Administer and prescribe preventative care for all shelter animals
- Treat and diagnose all injured and sick shelter animals
- Effectively communication diagnosis and treatment plan to shelter team
- Ensure local, state, and federal laws are followed, including proper maintenance of the controlled substance inventory log
- Understand and follow state guidelines regarding duties of veterinary assistants and licensed veterinary technicians
- Spay and neuter and monitor shelter animals
- Mentor Veterinarian staff
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The Veterinarian will be working both indoors and outdoors. Must be able to stand, walk, and move for extended periods of time. Proper use of medical equipment and supplies is mandatory. Must be able to have reliable transportation to conduct all work at the shelter in Summerville. This role requires flexibility and the ability to stand, lift, kneel, crouch, and bend. Frequent lifting of moving objects and materials is required up to 50 pounds.
