The Executive Director is a full-time position that supports staff, volunteers, and donors of Dorchester Paws. The primary responsibility is to ensure that donors, volunteers, and staff are having their needs met as it pertains to Dorchester Paws' mission and goals. This position oversees growing the donor database, ensuring donor retention, and cultivating relationships, so that Dorchester Paws may grow and support operations. The Executive Director is also the name and face of Dorchester Paws in the community and will handle public relations in the news and media. Duties include, but are not limited to, making budgets, planning campaigns, making business plans, improving performance, generating, and reporting revenue, and managing department heads, conducting public interviews with local news and government. Overall, the position helps to build upon Dorchester Paws' brand by nurturing the public's view and opinions as they pertain to the mission and strategic plan of the organization.


  • Organizing and leading a team of 25+ staff members on a daily basis
  • Ensuring marketing programs align with public relations and other communication activities
  • Assisting in preparation of long- and short-term business plans, and budgets
  • Maintain relations, including writing press releases and making appearances on local news stations
  • Manage various email campaigns, including a monthly newsletter and e-blasts
  • Oversee Director of Operations, Head Veterinarian, Director of Development
  • Track, measure and analyze all initiatives to report on ROI
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Build and nurture relationships with current and prospective donors
  • Create, implement, and execute a comprehensive annual fund plan to ensure goals are met
  • Utilize a prospect management system and research potential donors as needed
  • Participate with members of the Board to secure major gifts from current donors and prospects, and support leadership giving efforts
  • Research, apply, and oversee timely and accurate completion of grant applications and required reports, including a schedule of upcoming grants and pending proposals
  • Works closely with staff to identify opportunities to leverage additional donor support for grants
  • In coordination with the Business Manager, manage Dorchester Paws' donor database, implementing guidelines for usage, reporting, and gift acknowledgement procedures as well as maintain and execute a system for timely stewardship
  • Provide useful information and content for the newsletter, website, and social media platforms
  • Assures the maintenance of current and historical donor, grant making, and program files and records for Dorchester Paws, and accessibility of that information by Board, Staff, donors, auditors, and regulatory agencies
  • Assist with lowering euthanasia numbers and promote the no kill initiative and work to achieve no kill status at the shelter


  • 3 Years nonprofit Executive Director experience managing 25+ staff and a budget of at least $1.5 million
  • Successful completion of a Capital Campaign of at least $5 million
  • CAWA Certified
  • CFRE Certified
  • Excellent communication skills- public speaking and PR skills
  • Detail and goal oriented
